Two groups and 24 individuals were recognized for their outstanding contribution to conservation at the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Chairs Meeting held in Abu Dhabi this February.
The four award categories; The Harry Messel Award for Conservation Leadership, The George Rabb Award for Conservation Innovation, The Peter Scott Award for Conservation Merit and the SSC Chair’s Citation of Excellence were presented to members of the Species Survival Commission who have demonstrated excellent leadership or involvement in on-the-ground species conservation.
These committed conservationists work tirelessly, making significant contributions to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, and to many species conservation projects.
Over the next few months, the work of these conservation heroes will be highlighted in a series of blogs – revealing the challenges faced and successes achieved in conserving the species that they are so passionate about.
The first blog is by Dr Randall Reeves who was awarded the SSC Chair’s Citation of Excellence in recognition of his leadership of whale and dolphin conservation worldwide, and his exceptional service as Chair of the SSC Cetacean Specialist Group over many years. Read the blog here.
