Justification:
A sedge endemic to the high Andes of Ecuador. The only recorded populations occurs high on the volcanically active Volcán Pichincha, and may have been affected by recent eruptions. The population was discovered on the northern side of Pichincha, above Hacienda Yanacocha, in 1985. The collector mentioned that the plant occurred inside Polylepis forest, where it was apparently adapted to shade. Relocating the species might be dangerous while the volcano is active but necessary to avoid the population extinction.
