Justification:
A parasitic vine endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from two populations, one near Guayaquil (collected at least 100 years ago) and the other from Puná Island (collection from 1987). Also collected by J. Rémy, L. Mille and A. Hitchcock around the start of the twentieth century, but precise collection sites are unknown. The population from Puná Island suggests that the species should occur in well-preserved continental habitats, perhaps not in Guayaquil itself, but in the Parque Nacional Machalilla or in the Reserva Ecológica Manglares-Churute's semideciduous forest. Because of its unusual life form, it may have been overlooked by collectors. Potentially threatened by a lack of hosts if dry coastal forests are cut. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorean museums.
