Justification: A herb or subshrub endemic to Ecuador where it is known from two collections, both made inside the Reserva Ecológica Cayambe-Coca. One was recorded 38 years ago in the surroundings of the Laguna de San Marcos; another was made in 1998 from Oyacachi. Not locally abundant. After two field trips to search for the species in 1998, no individual was recorded around the Laguna de San Marcos and only four individuals in Oyacachi, in a transect of 45 km. Although the species occurs inside a protected area, it may be threatened by fires set by humans around the Laguna de San Marcos and deforestation around Oyacachi. |
