Justification:
Qualifies due to its small population in a single area, where it continues to decline as a result of illegal collecting. Since this species was rediscovered in 1987 (Fitz Maurice 1988), the population has diminished by an estimated 90% (Fitz Maurice 1994a, b).

Range Description:Grows near San Felipe on a steep volcanic rock face about 100 m (plan view) by 4 km long. Current estimated population size is less than 1,000 individuals.

Habitat and Ecology: Grows on steep volcanic rock in semi-desert at about 2,300 m altitude.
Systems: Terrestrial

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): very threatened by illegal collecting. The locality is a standard stop for cactus tour groups from Europe and is now well known to both commercial and amateur collectors.

Conservation Actions: Listed on CITES App. II, but enforcement of the law in countries of destination is needed. This species has been widely propagated worldwide for 40 years.
