Scientific Name: Hopea mollissima C.Y.Wu
Taxonomic Notes: Until 2017, Hopea mollissima was considered a synonym of Hopea chinensis but it has now been separated due to differing morphology (Newton pers. comm. 2017).

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Endangered A2cd ver 3.1
Year Published: 2017
Date Assessed: 2017-03-16
Assessor(s): Ly, V., Nanthavong, K., Pooma, R., Barstow, M., Hoang, V.S. & Khou, E.
Reviewer(s): Luu, H.T.
Facilitator/Compiler(s): Rivers, M.C.
Justification:
Hopea mollissima is a large tree species. It is native to China and Viet Nam. The species is uncommon and has undergone a 50–70% population reduction in the last three generations. This is due to clearance of forest habitat for expanding agriculture and local exploitation of the species for its timber. These remain threats to the species so decline will continue into the future but at an unknown rate. The species is found within protected areas but no ex situ collections. Hopea mollissima is globally assessed as Endangered. It is recommended that ex situ collections of the species are made, that population is monitored and remaining habitat is protected. Alternative use for the species and its habitat, alongside harvest management should also be investigated and initiated.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:This species is native to Yunnan province of China and is found in four provinces in North-Central Viet Nam. The species is present from sea level to 1,100 m asl. The species has a very small extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO).
Countries occurrence:
Native:
China (Yunnan); Viet Nam

Lower elevation limit (metres):100
Upper elevation limit (metres):1100

Population [top]

Population:Hopea mollissima is not a common species. Overall the population is decreasing. It has undergone a 50–70% population reduction in the last three generations (+300 years) due to clearance of forest habitat for expanding agriculture and local exploitation of the species for its timber. These remain threats to the species so decline will continue into the future but at an unknown rate.
Current Population Trend:Decreasing
Additional data:

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:This large tree can grow up to 40 m (Nguyen 2005). It is found in evergreen forest on deep, well-drained soils. The species is semi-shade tolerant hence it can germinate in the shade under tree canopy however requires greater light intensity to grow past the seedling stage to maturity. Hence the species is found in both primary and secondary forests (Hung 2008). The species habitat is declining in area, extent and quality due to agricultural expansion.
Systems:Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat:Yes
Generation Length (years):100

Use and Trade [top]

Use and Trade: This species is used for timber which is used for construction and joinery.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): The species is threatened by habitat loss led by the deforestation of land for agricultural expansion. The species is also at risk from logging for timber.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: The species is not reported from any ex situ collections (BGCI 2017). Further ex situ collections of the species should be made. Within Viet Nam the species occurs in protected areas. It is recommended that estimates of population size are made and population decline remains monitored. The remaining species habitat should be protected and harvest management initiated. Alternative and sustainable uses of the species and its habitat should be investigated.
