Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA MAMMALIA PRIMATES INDRIIDAE

Scientific Name: Avahi occidentalis
Species Authority: von Lorenz-Liburnau, 1898
Common Name(s):
English Lorenz Von Liburnau’s Woolly Lemur, Western Avahi, Western Woolly Lemur
Taxonomic Notes: Groves in Wilson and Reeder (1993) treats this as a synonym (or subsp.) of A. laniger, but it is accepted as a distinct species in more recent treatments (Mittermeier et al. 1994).

Reviewer(s): Schwitzer, C. & Molur, S.
Facilitator/Compiler(s): Chiozza, F.
Justification:
The species is distributed in two disjunct ranges which, calculated separately, sum up to 3,057 km²; the minimum convex polygon of the total range measures 8,619 km². This extent of occurrence (EOO) is severely fragmented and undergoing continuing decline in area, extent and quality of habitat. This spread of plausible values qualifies the taxon for two categories (Endangered and Vulnerable). The precautionary principle would recommend the taxon be listed under the higher (more threatened) category. Based on these premises, the species is listed as Endangered.
History:
2000 Vulnerable
1996 Vulnerable
1990 Vulnerable (IUCN 1990)

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: This species is endemic to the island of Madagascar. According to Thalmann and Geissmann (2000), the core distribution is to the north and east of the Betsiboka River as far as Bay of Narindra, and this is the species present in Ankarafantsika National Park. They consider that the isolated population much farther north in the Ankarana region also represents this species, but that in between A. unicolor inhabits both the Ampasindava Peninsula and the Sambirano region, including the Manongarivo Special Reserve. Also recorded from Mariarano Classified Forest (E. Louis pers. comm.).

Population [top]

Population: Ganzhorn (1988) estimated population densities in Ankarafantsika at 67 individuals/km2. Population numbers are in decline due to habitat destruction.
Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: It is found in dry deciduous forests, including secondary forest. They are specialized folivores, active at night, and living in family groups. In the dry forests of Ankarafantsika, groups of up to five individuals, typically consisting of an adult pair and immature offspring, occupy home ranges of 1–2 ha. Territorial defense appears to be less vigorous and vocal than in eastern rainforest Avahi, with greater overlap between neighbouring groups (Warren and Crompton 1997).
Systems: Terrestrial

Use and Trade [top]

Use and Trade: This species is hunted for food.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): The major threat is forest destruction due to annual burning that creates new cattle pasture. There may be some localized hunting, but this is probably not a major threat.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: This species is listed on Appendix I of CITES. This species is known to occur in Ankarafantsika National Park, the Bora Special Reserve, and in the Mariarano Classified Forest. It may perhaps be the species found in the Ankarana Special Reserve, though this has yet to be confirmed. Further research on population numbers and distribution is required. Consideration should be given to improving the protected areas status of Mariarano Classified Forest, which is already very well protected by the local people. Field surveys and genetic studies of Avahi populations at Ankarana are also needed to determine the taxonomic and conservation status of woolly lemurs in that area.
