As this variety is known from only two localities with a very small area of occupancy, and as wildfires represent a credible threat, an assessment of Vulnerable under the D2 criterion is appropriate.

Range Description: Endemic to Mexico, occurring in Coahuila (Mesa de las Tablas) and Nuevo León (Cerro Potosí). The extent of occurrence is less than 2,000 km2 and the area of occupancy of the two known subpopulations is less than 10 km2.

Population: Only known from two localities and from a few herbarium collections, this variety is either very rare or not recognized (some collections are sterile and cannot be identified to this variety). Population trends are unknown.

Habitat and Ecology: Found on high mountains (2,800-3,300 m asl) , presumably occurring with (both) other varieties recognized in this species in oak-pine forest.
