This recently described species is only known from two collections in Sichuan province, China. Further surveys are needed in the region to better understand its status. Due to the apparent lack of significant threats a rating of Least Concern is given. However, the present known range is restricted and the onset of any threatening process may warrant a re-assessment to a threatened category.

Range Description: Endemic to Sichuan province, China. Occurs between 3,600 m and 4,000 m.

Population [top]

Population: The population size is not known. E. dawuensis has only been recorded from two sites, Garze Xian and Dawu Xian. Reported to be common in Garze Xian (Hu 13049 - recorded in 1951).
Population Trend: Stable

Habitat and Ecology: Woody shrub to 0.5 m tall. Found on slopes in temperate grassland or shrubland.

Use and Trade [top]

Use and Trade: The stems of most members of this genus contain the alkaloid ephedrine and are valuable in the treatment of asthma and many other complaints of the respiratory system (Plants for a Future 2010).

Major Threat(s): No major threats are known.

Conservation Actions: Neither of the two known sites are within the protected area network. No ex situ collections are known. Further surveys are needed in the region to determine the status of the population.
