This species is distributed in the eastern tropical Pacific. It has been reported from illegal fisheries in El Salvador. There are some issues regarding the species taxonomy, and whether it is distinct from H. keferstenii. It may be collected in other parts of its range, but no information is available. It occurs in shallow habitat and is therefore very accessible. This species is listed as Data Deficient until more information is obtained on its taxonomy, distribution and threats (mainly fisheries).

This species is found in the Gulf of California, Revillagigedo, Mexican Pacific, Cocos Island, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, and Ecuador including the Galapagos (Solis-Marin et al. 2009, Alvarado et al. 2010; E. Barraza pers comm.. 2010).

This species is found between 0-18 m depth. It burrows under rocks on rock and sand substrates (Solis-Marin et al. 2009; J. Alvarado pers. comm. 2010).

This species is caught illegally in El Salvador, exports pass through Nicaragua to other destinations where a market exists. It is possibly extracted elsewhere in Central America (E. Barraza pers. comm.. 2010).

The main threat is illegal extraction is some parts of the species’ range. Habitat degradation is also a possible threat.

Conservation Actions:

Fisheries for this species is banned in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama. In El Salvador it is included in the national threatened species list (E. Barraza pers. comm.. 2010). It occurs in some protected areas within its range.
