This species is rare and is only known from a few shallow water specimens in Madagascar and the Red Sea, and records from Australia need to be confirmed. Although little is known about its distribution, population, habitat, or ecology, given its very shallow depth range, it may be impacted by pollution and other anthropogenic threats throughout its range. This species is listed as Data Deficient.

Range Description: This species is recorded from the eastern and western Indian Ocean from the Red Sea and Southeast Arabia (including Egypt and Jordan) in the northwest (Clark and Rowe 1971) and Madagascar. Records from Australia in the southeast (Rowe and Gates 1995) need to be confirmed.
