Habitat and Ecology: Lepilaena australis is often found growing with other seagrasses in estuarine environments, such as Zostera muellerii, Halophila ovalis and Ruppia spp.

This species occurs in muddy sandy substrates predominantly in estuaries and also in coastal marine lagoons and some inland saline lakes.
