Taxonomic Notes:

Taxonomic Reliability: Considered synonymous with M. mercadensis by cactus specialist Anderson (2001) and by the assessors. It is accepted as a species by cactus specialists Hunt (1999), provisionally, and Pilbeam (1999). The assessors have demonstrated that M. berkiana has no known characteristics that differentiate it from the surrounding M. jaliscana/M. mercadensis apart from the intensity of the flower color.

Justification: Qualifies due to its two known areas of occupancy, considered here to be a single location, where it was decimated by the Dec. 1997 freeze on Mexico’s Altiplano. At the time of the assessors’ first visit to the type locality with Lau in 1994, the population was estimated to be in excess of 5,000 plants. In 1999 the population was estimated to be less than 100 plants. This species is regarded by some to be synonymous with M. jaliscana and/or M. mercadensis.

Range Description:	Occurs north of San Andreas from two sites about 3 km apart, probably best considered a single location. The estimated total range is 25 km². It is estimated that the total area of occupancy of the two subpopulations is less than 1 km², and with a total population estimated to be less than 100 individuals.

Habitat and Ecology:	Sloping volcanic rocky terrain in semi-desert at about 1,600 m altitude.

Major Threat(s):	Currently little threatened by collectors. Although the habitat is known to collectors, the trip to the type locality from and back to the nearest rudimentary facilities takes a full day thus discouraging tour groups and casual collectors. Natural disasters seem to be the main cause for concern.
