Justification: Endemic to Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe. The main threat to this species is overfishing. A local decline in fishery catches is recorded for the southern parts of the lake, possibly due to the commercial trawl fishery, but the population is widespread throughout the rest of the lake where the trawl fishery is absent. Overall this species is assessed as Least Concern.

Range Description:	Endemic to Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe where it is widely distributed over sand habitats in both lakes.

Habitat and Ecology:	Observed over sandy substrates at depths of 15–20 m although the juveniles are found in shallow waters near rocks. Individuals can also be seen among macrophyte beds in shallow water. Breeding occurs on the sand. It is an ambush predator feeding on other fish and invertebrates. Known as ‘Haplochromis venustus’ in the aquarium trade. Max. size: 22.5 cm TL.
