This cavefish is known only from one cave system in a karst area in which the underground course of the Xe Bangfai is located in Laos. Based on the one location from which it is known, it is assessed as Vulnerable (D2), on the basis of restricted range and future threats.

Range Description: Known only from one cave system in the karst formation in which the underground course of the Xe Bangfai is located in Lao PDR.

Population: This species is known from a few specimens collected in 2007 and 2008 (Kottelat and Steiner 2011).

Habitat and Ecology: This is a cavefish species.
Systems: Freshwater

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Habitat disturbance through tourism activities taking place in the cave system and interest from the international aquarium trade could become threats in the future.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Local custom forbids fishing at the entrance of the underground stretch of the Xe Bangfai. The cave system occurs within a protected area (M. Kottelat pers. comm. 2011).
