This cavefish is known only from one cave system in a karst area in which the underground course of the Xe Bangfai is located in Laos. Based on the one location from which it is known, it is assessed as Vulnerable (D2), on the basis of restricted range and future threats.

|Conservation Actions:||Local custom forbids fishing at the entrance of the underground stretch of the Xe Bangfai. The cave system occurs within a protected area (M. Kottelat pers. comm. 2011).|
