Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA ACTINOPTERYGII CHARACIFORMES CHARACIDAE

Scientific Name: Creagrutus britskii
Species Authority: Vari & Harold, 2001

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern ver 3.1
Year Published: 2009
Date Assessed: 2007-03-01
Assessor(s): Reis, R & Lima, F.
Reviewer(s): Collen, B., Darwall, W., Ram, M. & Smith, K. (SRLI Freshwater Fish Evaluation Workshop)
Justification:
Assessed as Least Concern due to its fairly wide distribution. Damming that has occurred in the area of this species' distribution has not had a major impact on it.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: This species occurs in the upper Tocantins River basin in Brazil.

Native:
Brazil

Population [top]

Population: This species has a stable population trend at present.
Population Trend: Stable

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: C. britskii is a benthopelagic (ecological region at the lowest level of water body) species. Occurs in moderate sized tributaries, generally bottom swimmers feeding on benthic aquatic insects. Swim in small schools in fast flowing water.
Systems: Freshwater

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Damming is in fact a factor of major concern in regard to the conservation of the ichthyofauna of the upper Rio Tocantins area. Within the range of C. britskii the huge Serra da Mesa dam was built, which undoubtedly destroyed much habitat formerly occupied by the species. However, since C. britskii is a small-sized species which occurs in moderate-sized streams, only the building of large dams would not probably result in its demise.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: The species occurs in at least one conservation unit (Terra Ronca State Park in northern Goiás).
