Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
Animalia Chordata Mammalia Primates Cheirogaleidae

Scientific Name: Microcebus myoxinus
Species Authority: Peters, 1852
Common Name(s):
English Peters’ Mouse Lemur, Pygmy Mouse Lemur, Western Rufous Mouse Lemur
Taxonomic Notes: Groves in Wilson and Reeder (1993) treats this as a synonym under M. murinus. There is a problem with the typification of this taxon.

Reviewer(s): Schwitzer, C.
Facilitator/Compiler(s): Chiozza, F. & Clark, F.
Justification:

Listed as Vulnerable as the species is suspected to have undergone a population decline of ≥30% over a period of 15 years (three generations), due primarily to continuing decline in area, extent and quality of habitat caused by unsustainable agricultural practices. These causes have not ceased, and will to a large extent not be easily reversible. A population reduction of ≥30% over a 15 year period (including both the past and the future) is also suspected due to the same causes.

Previously published Red List assessments:
2008 Data Deficient (DD)
2000 Endangered (EN)
1996 Vulnerable (VU)

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: This species is reported to have a disjunct distribution range between the northern banks of the Tsiribihina River north to Baie de Baly in western Madagascar and to occur in the forests of Belo sur Tsiribihina and Aboalimena, the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park and Nature Reserve, and the Tsingy de Namoroka National Park (Mittermeier et al. 2008). Also possibly recorded from Besalampy (which is mangrove habitat). It ranges from sea-level to 900 m.
Countries occurrence:
Native:
Madagascar
Continuing decline in extent of occurrence (EOO): Yes
Upper elevation limit (metres): 900

Population [top]

Population: There is no reliable information on the population size of this species. It is probably not as common as M. murinus.
Current Population Trend: Decreasing
Additional data:
Population severely fragmented: Yes

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: This species has been collected from dry deciduous forest in the Tsingy de Bemaraha Nature Reserve and the Andramasy forests north of Belo sur Tsiribihina, as well as along the border of heavily degraded deciduous forest and savanna at Aboalimena (Rasoloarison et al. 2000). They have been recorded in mangroves in two localities, neither of which were near primary deciduous forest (Hawkins et al. 1998, J. Ganzhorn pers. comm.). The breeding season is thought to start in September and end in October, however its ecology and behaviour remain to be studied.
Systems: Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes
Generation Length (years): 5

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): This species is threatened by habitat loss and degradation from unsustainable agricultural practices.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: This species is listed on Appendix I of CITES. This species is reported to occur in two national parks (Tsingy de Bemaraha and Tsingy de Namoroka) and a nature reserve (Tsingy de Bemaraha). There are no specimens reported in captivity at this time (Mittermeier et al. 2008). Research priority is surveying between known points of distribution, and whether the species occurs more widely in mangroves requires further investigation. According to ISIS, this species is not being kept in captivity (2009).
