Justification:
This species found only in the most humid northeastern parts of Madagascar, between Analalava to Masoala. The populations is fragmented, individuals may be locally frequent but their total number is estimated to be between 80 to 100 across all of the four known sites. There is continuing decline because of habitat loss and exploitation of the species for its edible heart and collection of seed for the horticultural trade. The species therefore qualifies for listing as Critically Endangered. If the population is found to exceed 250 mature individuals, then it would need to be reassessed, but based on the current knowledge of the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy it would probably qualify as Endangered.
History:
1998 Critically Endangered
1997 Endangered (Walter and Gillett 1998)
