Assessor/s: Taylor, N.P.
Reviewer/s: Stuppy, W. & Taylor, N.P. (Cacti & Succulent Plant Red List Authority)

Justification:
Critically Endangered, since the only known locality is close to a road and may be visited by collectors for plants and seed. It is on privately owned agricultural land whose future must be regarded as uncertain and it is reasonable to project decline in habitat quality and numbers of individuals. The extent of occurrence and area of occupancy is less than 1 km².

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:Found at c. 250–300 m near the Rio Jequitinhonha, north-eastern Minas Gerais. The range of this species deserves further investigation, but is clearly much more restricted than that of its sister species, C. aureus, and is currently known only from a single locality. Uebelmann (1996) states it is from Itaobim, which is here assumed to refer to the Itinga locality, since the former is the closest town of any size and is the likely starting point for the short journey to Itinga. However, it should not be difficult to determine the extent of the species’ range more precisely, working eastwards from the known locality along the Rio Jequitinhonha valley.
