Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Data Deficient ver 3.1
Year Published: 2013
Date Assessed: 2010-05-18
Assessor(s): Conand, C., Purcell, S. & Gamboa, R.
Reviewer(s): Polidoro, B., Carpenter, K.E., Harwell, H. & Knapp, L.
Justification:
This species is only known from a few specimens from Reunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues (which form the Mascarene Islands) in the Indian Ocean, and there is one record from the Philippines. It is not known if there are any threats to this species, and it is important to note that it has the potential to be fished at least in the Philippines. Therefore it is listed as Data Deficient.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:This species is found in the Indo-West Pacific from the Mascarene Islands (in the Indian Ocean) and the Philippines.
Countries:
Native:

Population [top]

Population: This species is only known from a few specimens (only one from the Philippines).  It can be found at high numbers, but is only known from a few specimens due to its nocturnal habits (Rowe and Massin 2006).
Population Trend: Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: This species is reef associated, most commonly occuring on reef slopes and drop-offs. It can also be found in shallow water, occurring nocturnally on a variety of substrates feeding on fine sediment that occur on microalgae and dead coral cover (Rowe and Massin 2006).
Systems: Marine

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): It is not known if there are any threats to this species. Given its shallow depth range, it has the potential to be fished and/or impacted by a number of anthropogenic threats.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: There are no known conservation measures in place for this species, although its distribution directly overlaps with marine protected areas in the Philippines and the Mascarene Islands.
