Justification:
Endemic to one lake in Israel. The species has not been recorded since 1990, in spite of searches for the species both in the lake and in local markets. Destruction of breeding habitat (marsh area in north part of the lake) may be the reason for its apparent disappearance. Drought resulted in the spawning area drying out in 1991 then again in mid 1990s. The species may already be extinct, but further searches are necessary to confirm this.

Range Description: This species is restricted to the Kinneret (Tiberias) Lake in Israel. The genus is endemic to the Levant.

Population: This species may be extinct. It was last seen in 1989/90. Since then, it has not been found (either in the lake or in local markets) in spite of attempts to find it.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: A lacustrine species. Reproduction occurs in spring (April-July): it is a paternal mouth brooder. The species feeds on zooplankton and small fish.

Major Threat(s): Destruction of breeding habitat (marsh area in north part of the lake) may be the reason for its apparent disappearance. The marsh area was dry in 1991, then again in mid 1990s, as a result of droughts.
