Endemic to the Nankumba peninsular in Lake Malawi. This range is considered as a single location due to the potential impacts of local fishing and sedimentation, which could effect the entire population.

Range Description:Endemic to Lake Malawi where it has been recorded at the Nankhumba peninsula from Otter point to Nkudzi, and also at Thumbi West and Domwe Island.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:Prefers the sediment rich part of the rocky habitat but is sometimes found in the intermediate zone as well. Its normal depth distribution is between 10–25 m but it may be found in shallower waters. Breeding males are territorial and defend a cave against intruders. Feeds on algae or invertebrates. Exported in the aquarium trade.

Major Threat(s): Sedimentation of the inshore rocky habitat. Potential for localised over-fishing (even within the National Park). Restricted range.
