Endemic to Lakes Malawi, Malombe and the Upper Shire River where it is widespread with no known major widespread threats.

Range Description: Endemic to Lake Malawi, the Upper Shire River, and Lake Malombe. In Lake Malawi it is a common species in the southern part of the lake as far north as Senga bay on the west coast and Fort Maguire on the east coast.

Habitat and Ecology: Has been caught over sand habitats at depths of between 10 and 18 m. Its diet and reproductive behaviour are unknown. Has been exported in the aquarium trade.Max. size: 18 cm TL.
