Endemic to Lake Malawi only known from four restricted locations. Potenitally vulnerable to over-collection for the aquarium trade.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Found along the rocky shores of Likoma Island and Chizumulu Island. May also occur between Msisi and Manda (Tanzania). A small subpopulation is found at Cobwe (Mozambique). The shoreline between Cobwe and Manda, a stretch of more than 200 km, does not seem to harbour this species.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Occurs in the intermediate habitat at depths of 10–30 m. Frequently found in sediment rich areas with muddy deposits covering the substrate. Feeds on particulate matter from the water column. This species constructs a cave crater nest under and against a small rock. This species is known as Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Likoma" in the aquarium trade and is very popular among aquarists.
