The population is restricted to one location, Lake Chala (extent of occurrence <100 km²), where it continues to decline due to habitat deterioration through siltation, erosion and weed infestation (needs confirmation).

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Lives in Lake Chala, which is a deep, clear lake (Trewavas 1983). Young feed on algae and debris from the bottom between the rocks near the shore. No information was obtained on the food preference of adults (Trewavas 1983). Max. size: 253 mm SL (Trewavas and Teugels 1991).
