The species is widespread and is assumed to occur throughout the Pangani river basin and also the Zigi River. It has no known major widespread threats.

Range Description:Endemic to the Zigi and Pangani rivers in Tanzania. It might also be present in the Kenyan part of the Pangani system. It is possibly also introduced in Lake Chala, but this needs confirmation.
