Listed as Endangered because its Extent of Occurrence is less than 5,000km2 and its Area of Occupancy is less than 500km2, its distribution is severely fragmented, and there is a continuing decline in the number of mature individuals; and because its population size is estimated to number fewer than 2,500 mature individuals, it is in continuing decline, and no subpopulation is estimated to contain more than 250 mature individuals.

Range Description: This species is known from scattered localities in Ilan, Taitung, Taichung, Hualien, Kaohsiung and Kenting in Taiwan, Province of China. It has been recorded from low to mid altitudes.

Habitat and Ecology: It inhabits primary broadleaf forests, and breeds in tree holes and buckets placed in forests.

Major Threat(s): The cause of the decline in this species is not clear, since its habitat is not believed to be currently threatened.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: It is protected within Fu-shan Nature Reserve and Li-chia Wildlife Refuge. Further research is needed to investigate the reasons for the decline in this species, and close population monitoring is required.
