Listed as Endangered because its Extent of Occurrence is less than 5,000 km2, all individuals are in fewer than five locations, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat on Borneo and Sumatra.

This species is known from northern Borneo (Malaysia) and from one locality in Sumatra, Indonesia. It has an altitudinal range of 700-1,800m asl. |

It has been found only in primary submontane and montane forests. Males call from trees overhanging small, clear, rocky streams where the larvae develop.

Habitat loss as a result of clear-cutting is the major threat to this species, and logging has already severely damaged the habitat at one known locality, Mount Trus Madi, in Borneo.

Besides Gunung Kinabalu National Park, it is also present in the Crocker Range, in Malaysian Borneo; however, the Sumatran locality lies outside any protected areas.
