Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
PLANTAE TRACHEOPHYTA LILIOPSIDA ORCHIDALES ORCHIDACEAE

Scientific Name: Bulbophyllum pandanetorum
Species Authority: Summerh.

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Endangered B2ab(iii) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2004
Date Assessed: 2004-04-30
Assessor(s): Pollard, B.J. & Darbyshire, I.
Reviewer(s): Zapfack, L. & Cribb, P.J. (Orchid Red List Authority)
Justification:
This taxon was previously known from two collections made in September 1925 in the Ngounyé River area of Gabon, the type from near Kembélé, and the second from along the River Dévèla. Both were recorded growing on Pandanus trees, hence the specific epithet. The discovery of this species growing in submontane forest on Mt Kupe in June 1996 greatly extends the extent of occurrence of this species, but it is clearly scarce, not having been recollected in Gabon and not having been found elsewhere in western or southern Cameroon, despite extensive botanical survey work there. There is continuing decline due to habitat loss through the encroachment of farms.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Occurs in lowland or submontane forest; ca. 200–950 m alt.
Systems: Terrestrial

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): The location above Nyasoso on Mt Kupe is below the lower altitudinal limit of effective protection on the mountain and thus vulnerable to habitat loss through encroachment of farms; threats to the Gabon sites are unknown.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Attempts should be made to rediscover this species in its previous collection localities, and to bring this species into cultivation for ex situ conservation. Status of habitat at the Gabon locations needs to be researched.
