Justification:
A terrestrial herb endemic to Ecuador. Found in wet forest on the western slopes of Pichincha, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo provinces, and in upper Andean forests at Apuela (Imbabura). This last population is unusually high, since the genus is rarely found growing above 2400 m elevation. The type was collected in Chaupi-Sagcha, Pululahua, probably inside the Reserva Geobotánica Pululahua. In 1997, the IUCN proposed the "Rare" category (Walter and Gillett 1998). Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
