Justification:
A subshrub endemic to southern Ecuador, where it is abundant and conspicuous in open habitats of the Cuenca valley. Several subpopulations are probably fragments of what was once a single larger population. Protected in the Parque Nacional Cajas and the Parque Nacional Sangay. Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998) but considered Least Concern in this evaluation. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
