A herb or subshrub endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from two subpopulations. The type was collected close to Oña, Loja province. A second subpopulation has been found near the Río León, Azuay province. Neither is inside Ecuador’s protected areas network. The species may be severely threatened because it was collected along roadsides near growing towns. Some authors place this in the genus Monnina. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
