A shrub endemic to southeastern Ecuador and known only from the 1944 type collection. The type locality is along the upper Río Upano, near the mouth of the Río Paute, close to Méndez. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorean museums and it is not confirmed in any protected area. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
