A shrub endemic to Ecuador's southeastern Andes, where it is known only from three collections. Discovered on the Loja–Zamora road and also collected on the Yangana–Valladolid road, inside the Parque Nacional Podocarpus. Probably occurs elsewhere in the Parque Nacional Podocarpus. Considered Not Determined in 1997 by the IUCN (Walter and Gillett 1998). Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
