Justification:
A shrub endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from four collections on the eastern slopes of the Andes. Three collections are from 1939, near Puyo, Mera and Canelos. The most recent collection, from 1991, was made near the Hollín and Challua Yacu rivers, south of the Sumaco volcano. Probably occurs in the Parque Nacional Sumaco-Napo-Galeras and in the Parque Nacional Sangay. Considered "Rare" by the IUCN in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998). Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
