Justification:
A shrub endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from ten populations in the eastern paramos of Azuay province. Reported from the paramos of Matanga, Castillo, Patacocha and Culebrillas, and from the Gualaceo–Sígsig–Gualaquiza road. There is a reported population in Loja, in the Parque Nacional Podocarpus, near the Lagunas del Compadre, but the determination is uncertain. Considered "Rare" by the IUCN in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998). Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
