Red List Category & Criteria: Near Threatened ver 3.1
Year Published: 2004

Assessor(s): Cornejo, X., Suin, L. & Pitman, N.
Reviewer(s): Valencia, R., Pitman, N., Léon-Yánez, S. & Jørgensen, P.M. (Ecuador Plants Red List Authority)
Justification:
A terrestrial herb endemic to Andean Ecuador, with two endemic subspecies. Subspecies humboldtiana is known from two collections: the type, collected 130 years ago in Llalla, and a second, without date nor locale, simply labeled "Peru". This information is apprently incorrect, since the species is considered endemic to Ecuador (Weigend 2000). Subspecies roseoalba has been collected several times in six populations in disturbed roadside vegetation along the Quevedo-Latacunga road, near Chillanes and Huigra. Two new records of the subspecies have been collected by X. Cornejo and C. Bonifaz on the western Andean slopes of El Oro province. In both areas, the species is persistent in disturbed areas, growing weedily along trails and in settled areas. Common name: "ortiguilla". No specific threats are known.
