Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Vulnerable A2c; B2ab(iii,v) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2014
Date Assessed: 2011-03-25
Assessor(s): Darbyshire, I.
Reviewer(s): Onana, J.-M. & Cheek, M.
In Cameroon this taxon has a patchy distribution, being absent from several seemingly suitable areas including the Bakossi Mountains and much of Mt Cameroon. The assessment of this taxon as Vulnerable made in Cheek et al. (2004a: 140) is maintained here since no new data are available. The listing of Vulnerable is based on at least a 30% population reduction in the last 60 years (three generations) and a small area of occupancy of 64 km2 and continuing decline in the extent and quality of the habitat where it occurs.

Population [top]

Population:The population size is not known, but is undergoing significant decline with more than 30% reduction in the past three generations and continuing.
Current Population Trend:Decreasing
Additional data:
Continuing decline of mature individuals:Yes
Population severely fragmented:No

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:Grows in the understorey of closed canopy mid-elevation forest; (600-)900-1,400 m alt.
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat:Yes
Generation Length (years):20

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Throughout its range, it is threatened by extensive forest clearance. At more than 30% of  the known sites, its habitat either has or is being lost. The Gembu and Northwest Region subpopulation is highly threatened as closed-canopy forest is scarce here today and still being lost; it was noted in the collection of 1975 that the forest patch in which it was found was "now in exploitation by local people with handsaws" (Leeuwenberg 8648); this site is therefore likely to be lost. At Mt Kupe, it was recorded most often above Nyasoso, at around 1,000 m alt., where agricultural encroachment is causing significant losses of forest. Sites around Yaoundé  and at Bova are also likely to have been lost. The status at Bertoua and Obang is unknown.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Protection of existing mid-elevation forest is urgently needed where possible.
