A terrestrial herb endemic to Andean Ecuador, where it is known only from the type, recorded in Bolívar province in 1979. The species forms clusters in windswept sandy plains at the Volcán Chimborazo. An expedition to the area is necessary to evaluate the population status. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorean museums. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
