A subshrub endemic to Ecuador's southern Andes, where it is known from three populations in a relatively small area between Zaruma and Saraguro. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network, but may be found in the Parque Nacional Cajas. The principal threat is destruction of the few remaining paramos on the western slopes of the Andes.
