A tree endemic to Andean Ecuador, where it is known only from the type collected by the American botanist J. Steyermark in 1943. The label says "Rancho Achupallas, Quebrada Honda," but the exact location is unknown. Probably occurs inside the Parque Nacional Sangay. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
