Justification:
A tree endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from five populations on the northwestern Andean slopes. Collected in the ENDESA private reserve, in Pedro Vicente Maldonado, near Maquipucuna, and inside the Reserva Etnica Awá. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network, but may be present in the Reserva Ecológica Cotacachi-Cayapas, and could even reach the Colombian Chocó. The principal threat is deforestation and fragmentation, due to disorganized colonization. The species remains in the Vulnerable category suggested by the IUCN three years ago (Walter and Gillett 1998). No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorean museums.
