This species is only found at one location (Kyella) in Lake Malawi. This region is very disturbed with sedimentation and pollution.

Population densities provided in Genner and Michel (2003) for mixed Malawi Melanoides state a max of 1370 individuals/m2. Louda et al. (1983) state 123 individuals/m2 at Cape Maclear in shallow water.
