The EOO is less than 20,000km² based on its presence at only two sites in Lake Malawi down to 21 m, though it is possibly more widely distributed. The threats facing this species are localised and dispersed, and it is therefore assessed as Near Threatened. |

| Population: | Population densities provided in Genner and Michel (2003) for mixed Malawi Melanoides state a max of 1370 individuals/m2. Louda et al. (1983) state 123 individuals/m2 at Cape Maclear in shallow water. |
