Justification:
A subshrub endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from two collections, one at Chiriboga on the western Andean slopes. Appears in the checklist of Peru (Brako and Zarucchi 1993) as a synonym of P. sonchoides; in the Ecuadorian checklist it is treated as a distinct taxon and possibly a hybrid (Nordenstam in Jørgensen and León-Yánez 1999). No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.
