Justification:
A herb or vine endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from two subpopulations. One is on the northwestern slopes of Monte Corazón (near the Reserva Ecológica Los Ilinizas) and the other on the eastern slopes of Volcán Cayambe (probably inside the Reserva Ecológica Cayambe-Coca). M. asplundii has not been collected in the last 40 years. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.

Range Description: Known from two subpopulations from the Napo and Pichincha provinces. One subpopulation is on the northwestern slopes of Monte Corazón (near the Reserva Ecológica Los Ilinizas) and the other on the eastern slopes of Volcán Cayambe.
