A shrub endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from one collection recorded in 1943, in paramos near Toreador, between Molleturo and Quinoa, Azuay province. Currently the locale is protected in the Parque Nacional Cajas. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.
