Justification:
An epiphytic fern endemic to Ecuador, where it is widely distributed in forests bordering paramos in the northern provinces of Carchi and Imbabura. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network, but may occur in the Reserva Ecológica Cotacachi-Cayapas and the Reserva Ecológica Cayambe-Coca. There has been some confusion with the type specimen and the species has occasionally been considered a synonym of H. fucoides. Stolze (1987) resolved this confusion. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Apart from habitat destruction, no other threats are known. Nearly meets the requirements for listing as Vulnerable under criterion B.
