A shrub endemic to Ecuador where it is known only from the type, which only includes data on country and collector. Collected by L. Mille between 1859 and 1878 and not seen again in 120 years. The lack of information makes it impossible to assess the species' threat status. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.

Range Description: Burmeistera formosa is endemic to Ecuador. It is known only from the type, collected from an unknown locality between 1859 and 1878. May already be extinct.
