An epiphytic or terrestrial bromeliad endemic to Ecuador where it is widely distributed in the coastal forest of Esmeraldas province. One subpopulation is protected inside the Reserva Etnica Awá and another in the Reserva Ecológica Mache-Chindul. The subpopulations outside of Ecuador’s protected areas network are threatened by the conversion of forest to croplands and pasture. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.

Range Description:Werauhia paupera is endemic to Ecuador. It is widely distributed in Carchi, Esmeralda and Pichincha provinces.
